Riga Travel guide : a calm, soulful escape in Latvia

4–6 minutes

Hey, welcome back to the blog.
If you’re here, chances are you’ve read some of my burnout stories. But today, we’re heading in a different direction — and yet, not so different after all. This blog was born from pain, but it’s about more than that. It’s about turning pain into something meaningful. Maybe even something beautiful.

Her Travel Memories is more than just travel — it’s the journey of my soul as I try to rebuild myself after burnout. Searching for peace in quiet cities. Healing through slow days and hidden cafés. Sometimes, it’s just about feeling the sun on my face in a special place.

And today, I want to tell you about one of those places: Riga.

I’ve visited a lot of European cities over the years, but Riga holds a special place. It felt like a breath of life after a long stretch of grey. I went there in mid-June for my birthday, hoping to reconnect with myself — to slow down, to feel, to exist a little more fully again.

And Riga was the perfect city for that.

The old town is absolutely beautiful and buzzing with life. From colorful facades to cozy cafés and bars tucked into every corner, it’s a place that welcomes you no matter what you’re seeking. Whether you’re into architecture, nightlife, or like me, simply looking for a quiet escape — Riga offers something for everyone.

I arrived by bus from the airport (bus 22 — really easy to find). But I chose to get off a stop early, just to take a moment and feel the city. I crossed the Valdemāra bridge on foot, letting the view sink in. The river, the city skyline, the light — there was something soft and steady about it that stayed with me. You’ll find some photos just below from that moment. It was my first real glimpse of Riga, and it made me pause.

Once you cross the bridge, you reach the old town — and if you’re planning to stay in Riga, this is where you want to be. It’s the heart of the city. Whether it’s morning, afternoon, or evening, you can stop at a terrace, sip something warm (or cold), and just watch the city breathe.

You might see a group pedaling through the streets on a giant cycle bar — people riding and drinking their way across town. It’s fun, chaotic, and oddly charming. Riga’s nightlife is lively, and drinks are cheap, but before you jump into that, I highly recommend going up St. Peter’s Church to get a panoramic view over the city. It’s one of those perspectives that makes everything feel a little more magical.

And while you wander the ancient cobbled streets, look up now and then — you might spot some cat figures on rooftops, perched with a bit of mischief and mystery. Riga is full of small surprises like that, if you’re paying attention.

If you keep wandering, you’ll eventually come across a large, peaceful park. It stretches between the old town and the new town — a kind of natural border. The vibe shifts slightly here: it’s a little quieter, a little less colorful, but just as charming in its own way.

I really recommend taking the time to explore this part of the city on foot. Let yourself get lost in the side streets and admire the Art Nouveau facades — Riga is famous for them, and it’s easy to see why. This is also the place to go if you’re looking for a trendy coffee spot or a relaxed brunch. The atmosphere is calm but alive, especially in the late morning sun.

And of course, don’t miss the golden dome of the cathedral, shining like a beacon, or the impressive architecture of Riga University — both worth a pause and a photo.

If the weather is kind to you, like it was to me, spend an afternoon simply reading in the park. I did — and it felt like time stood still. You can also rent a pedal boat and drift lazily through the river that weaves its way through the city. It’s a beautiful and peaceful way to see Riga from a new angle, surrounded by trees, bridges, and calm reflections.

And finally, take the time to enjoy a drink as the sun sets over the city. Dama Coffee Bar or the Sunset Lounge are perfect spots to pause, breathe, and watch the light fade gently over the rooftops. Just let the city’s energy settle around you. Soak in that moment of calm — before stepping back into the beautiful chaos of Riga’s Old Town nightlife.

Riga gave me exactly what I didn’t know I needed: space to breathe, beauty to admire, and time to just be. It reminded me that healing doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic — sometimes it’s as simple as wandering slowly through quiet streets, feeling the warmth of the sun on your face, or watching the sky change colors above a city that doesn’t expect anything from you. Riga will always feel like a pause — a gentle, golden pause — in the long story of coming back to myself.
